Theo Hesegem: The Shooting Of Two Teachers In Papua Is Cruel and Inhuman

Executive Director of the Papua Justice and Human Integrity Foundation (World Human Rights Defender) Theo Hesegem strongly condemns the shooting of two teachers in Beoga, Puncak Regency, because it was a very heinous and inhuman act.

"It must be immediately formed a joint team involving various parties to investigate the case of the shooting of the two teachers. As a human rights defender, I am very sorry that the brutal action that was allegedly carried out by the KKB / TPNPB cost the lives of both teachers, who did not know the problem at all? What's the benefit of shooting civilians who don't know the problem, "said Theo Hesegem in a written statement to the media in Jayapura, Sunday (11/4) night.

Theo said teachers as citizens of their country also have the same right to life, as citizens they also have the right to live throughout Indonesia, including Papua.

“They came to develop human resources in Papua, why were they shot? With teachers, we can be smart and become great people in this land to develop Papua, ”he said.

Teachers should be given freedom, according to Theo, so that they are free to carry out their duties and responsibilities as teachers, they must be free, respected and respected by everyone including the KKB / TPNPB.

The arrival of teachers at the Beoga school to teach children and develop human resources and education in Tanah Papua, especially Puncak Regency.

"It is necessary to know that without teachers, education in Papua cannot progress, therefore everyone has an obligation to look after and protect teachers even though they are non-Papuans," he hoped.

So that the relationship between indigenous Papuans and non-Papuan people has a very harmonious relationship and builds civilization in the Land of Papua, he said.

Theo said, if indeed the shooting was allegedly carried out by the KKB / TPNPB, it was an immeasurable action and it was detrimental to school children because without the school teacher it would not run well.

“All students will be stupid for not studying well. Teachers shouldn't be shot and in my opinion, this action is inhumane, ”he said.

He also considered that if it was true that the shooting was carried out by the KKB / TPNPB, then this action would seriously injure the struggle of those who had been fighting for an independent Papua in the eyes of the international community.

As a human rights defender, Theo continued, he deeply regretted that the actions taken by the KKB / TPNPB were so unprofessional.

According to him, all these actions must be accounted for legally in accordance with the applicable law.

"As a human rights defender, he strongly condemns the action because he thinks it is very inhumane. The only one who can take human life away is God, not man. I am very sorry for the shooting of the two teachers who were in Beoga, because the future of children's education in Puncak Papua Regency will be left far behind, "he said concerned.

Theo asked that teachers must and must be protected by everyone, they (teachers) cannot be treated like that, because teachers are educators whose aim is to educate Papuan children, who will later build Puncak and Papua in general.

The shooting of two teachers in Beoga, Puncak Regency, Oktovianus Rayo and Yonatan Renden is strongly suspected of being carried out by an armed criminal group on Thursday 8 April and Friday 9 April 2021, which resulted in the deaths of both of them at their assignment.

He also asked that the perpetrators of the shooting of these teachers must be arrested and processed according to the law, because the actions that were carried out were illegal.
