Papua Provincial Government Schools 30 Specialist Doctors

Chairperson of the Alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Cenderawasih (FK Uncen) Jayapura dr. Andreas Pekey, SpPD appreciated the Papua Provincial Government for being willing to finance a specialist doctor education program for 30 Papuan general practitioners in 2021 in the context of preparing the Human Resources (HR) for health in Cenderawasih Earth.

"I just met the Dean of the FK UI and 22 Papuan pediatricians who are currently studying at UI. They have only been in college for four months. This is a good start for us to prepare human resources for health in Papua, "said dr. The editorial contacted Andreas Pekey on his cell phone, Saturday (24/4/2021).

Andreas, who is also the Director of BLUD at Nabire Hospital, explained that on Friday (23/04/2021), he visited the FK campus of the University of Indonesia in Jakarta to monitor the progress of the studies of 22 Papuan doctors there. He also had the opportunity to meet the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (UI) Prof. Dr.dr Ari Fahrial Syam, Sp.PD KGEH, MMB, FINASM, FACP to discuss and monitor the progress of studies in this collaboration.

"We are grateful to the Papua Provincial Government, the Governor and Deputy Governor of Papua, in particular the Papua Province Human Resources Empowerment Agency who has responded to the proposal from the Head of the Papua Health Service so that 30 Papuan children can take the specialist this year. Last year, we pushed this proposal to the Papua Kadinkes, "said Andreas.

According to Andreas, this specialist doctor program was built in cooperation with the Papua Provincial Government through the Human Resources Empowerment Agency with the Faculty of Medicine, UI. Apart from UI, a similar collaboration was also built with FK Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta and FK Udayana Bali.
Of course, outside of this program, a number of other FKs have also taken part in educating Papuan doctors to become specialist doctors, such as Unair Surabaya, Unpad Bandung, Unhas Makassar, and Undip Semarang.

"So for the specialist doctor program in 2021, a total of 30 Papuan children have started their studies. In FK UI there are 22 doctors, others at UGM and Udayana. They are financed by the Papua Provincial Government. There are specialists who take internal medicine, eye, neurosurgery, various things, "he explained.

Andreas said, FK Uncen Alumni are committed to continue to encourage the preparation of quality health human resources, especially doctors to support health services in Tanah Papua. So far, he said, many Papuan children graduated from FK Uncen and from other universities who have good academic abilities, but cannot continue to specialize because of costs.

"Because most of them come from poor families. That's why we encourage this program and hope that it will continue so that there is an equal distribution of human resources for specialist doctors throughout Indonesia, especially Papua and West Papua. Moreover, Jayapura Regional Hospital is being pushed to become type A or Nabire Hospital to be type B. This requires a large number of specialist doctors and consultants, "said the graduate of the Faculty of Medicine UI who specializes in Internal Medicine.

He also hopes that with the commencement of this Papuan doctor specialization program, Papuan students who are currently undergoing general medical studies, especially at the Uncen FK, can be more motivated to learn.

"Little brothers and sisters, please be active again with the enthusiasm for studying. In the past, as first students at FK Uncen, we experienced many challenges, especially the learning facilities which were very limited. But we can. "With the ease of learning facilities and infrastructure now, the quality of your output should be higher than ours," said Andreas.
