Papua is strengthened by swimming athletes who set national records

The Papuan contingent will be strengthened by one of the national swimmers in the XX National Sports Week (PON) swimming sport in October this year. Is Farrel Armandio Tangkas, a swimmer who once set a national record at the 2019 Jakarta Swimming Championship.

In this event, Farrel set a national record in the men's 200 meter backstroke with a time of 2 minutes 01.16 seconds.

Before setting the national record, Farrel also had a chance to set a national record at the Philippines SEA Age Group event in 2018.

Not only that, this young swimmer even contributed medals for Indonesia at the 2019 Philippines SEA Games. In this prestigious event, Farrel won a silver medal in the men's 200 meter backstroke. Remarkably, Farrel was 17 years old at the time.

"I galvanized Dio (Farrel) with the new style of choice, namely the backstroke. Praise God, after competing in this number, he could immediately place himself in the regional to national rankings. I said there was an opportunity in the backstroke and I was sure that Dio would be able to compete at the highest stage at the national level, ”said the coach who had worked with Farrel, William Tedja Adrisurya, who is familiarly called Koh Ayin.

The presence of Farrel in the Papuan contingent has made the Provincial Management of the Indonesian Swimming Association (PRSI) Papua even more confident. PRSI Papua then targeted 1 gold medal.

"Our target is one gold medal, even more because we have a swimmer whose acceleration can be relied on. Farrel is now joining the national training team, he is the holder of the Indonesian backstroke. And the existence of world standard aquatic has become a trigger for athletes to continue to excel for the Papuan contingent, "said Saharudin Itaa, as the General Secretary of the Papua PRSI provincial government, recently.

Not only that, Saharudin is also optimistic that the existence of an international standard Aquatic arena at the Kampung Harapan Sentani Sports Complex, Jayapura Regency, can provide fighting motivation for its 14 athletes who are undergoing training camps in Jakarta, Surabaya and Jayapura.

The swimming sport at PON XX will compete for 5 numbers, namely water polo, beautiful jumping, artistic swimming, swimming and pool diving with 40 competition number disciplines.
