Ex-Lucky Matuan Raider Soldier Turns to OPM

One TNI soldier, Lucky Y Matuan from the Yonif Raider400 / Banteng Raiders unit, defected and joined the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB). However, the traitor was known to have occurred in February 2021.

Intelligence and Military Observer Susaningtyas Kertopati thinks the Lucky Y Matuan case can be seen from various sides.

Susaningtyas assessed that the person concerned could be seen as less nationalistic and disloyal to the sapta marga, so that he too deserves to be called a traitor to the nation and should be tried by the Military Court.

"On the other hand, TPNPB was lured by the TPNPB with the lure of pragmatism," said the woman who is familiarly called Nuning when contacted, Tuesday (20/4/2021).

He continued, the phenomenon of former TNI soldiers defecting to TPNPB was a game of opinion so that they could claim that the TNI alone sympathized with them. Even though the numbers are only a handful.

"If we talk about this problem, the government must evaluate the handling of this opinion," said the woman who is also a former member of Commission I DPR RI.

According to him, if we look at the various events in Papua, it is certainly appropriate to include it as 'Insurgency', where the main key in defeating insurgency is that the state must be able to win public support, both locally, nationally and internationally, and use minimum force to avoiding collateral victims of unnecessary community members so that people do not antipathy to the state and give sympathy to insurgency groups

In addition, said Nuning, it is important for the state to conduct propaganda and counter-propaganda that is measured, effective, efficient and right on target. "Through this, the socio-political construction that shapes public opinion can minimize support for insurgency groups," he said.

Nuning explained that insurrection is a form of asymmetric warfare. The phenomenon of the insurgency movement is, in principle, a political struggle carried out by a group of people in a state territory against the government which has a sovereign authority.
