Preparation of the Papua PON arena in Merauke has reached 95 percent

The Regent of Merauke Regency Romanus Mbaraka said that 95 percent of the preparation for the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) arena in the Merauke cluster and its supporting facilities had reached 95 percent and it was confirmed that it would be completed before the championship on October 2-15.

"I have asked the contractor who built the competition arena and the athlete's house, all of which are in progress and will be completed in the near future," said Romanus Mbaraka as quoted from the local district government's official website, Tuesday.

The Merauke cluster will later host six sports, namely women's soccer at the Katalpal Stadium, motorcycle racing in the Tanah Miring District, fencing at the ST Yoseph Church complex, chess at the Swissbell Hotel Ballroom, wrestling at the Dispora Futsal Sports Hall and wushu at the Dispora Futsal Sports Hall.

Although the preparations have been 95 percent, Romanus Mbaraka added that there are several other important things that must be discussed with a number of regional officials, including partners who are given the responsibility to complete a number of arenas and athletes' homes for PON Papua.

"So this meeting is for routine evaluations carried out by the Merauke district government considering that the implementation of the XX PON is in sight," said Romanus Mbaraka.

According to the Regent, all preparations continue despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the implementation of the XX PON in Papua must be successful in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

Regarding the audience, whether the public is allowed to watch during the match, according to the Regent of Mbaraka, is currently in discussion and will be continued with the PB PON Papua to the central government.

"So just wait, there must be further information submitted by the government ahead of the XX PON about whether with spectators or not when the six sports are held in Merauke Regency," concluded Mbaraka.
