Papua PON Success, Menpora: Extraordinary Collaboration Across Agencies

Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Zainuddin Amali said the success of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) on October 2-15 was due to cross-institutional cooperation, including from the TNI-Polri and the Regional Government in Papua.

Menpora, in a written statement monitored by Antara in Jayapura, Friday (15/10/2021), said that the success of the Papua PON as the host of the national multi-sports party could be seen without any disturbances, so the event had to stop.

"I see the achievement (success) target, implementation (success) target, and economic (success) target have been achieved as a whole," said the Menpora when he was present at the RRI Jayapura office.

In terms of achievements, PON XX has set 57 national and international records in sports events held during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, from an economic perspective, the Minister of Youth and Sports stated that the income contribution of business actors in Papua has tripled.

"Extraordinary collaboration has been created from the central government across ministries, the TNI, and the National Police. In addition, there is also collaboration between the central government and local governments in the provinces or cities and districts," he said.

The success of the event was also contributed by other regions in Indonesia who had sent their contingents to participate in attending and competing in Papua.

PON XX, continued the Minister of Youth and Sports, is evidence of the doubts and worries, even fears, of the public regarding the implementation of the four-yearly national sporting event in Papua.

The Head of the Intelligence and Security Agency of the National Police Paulus Waterpauw appreciated the smooth implementation of the Papua PON, which was commanded by Menpora Zainuddin Amali.

Paulus said that the implementation of the 20th PON until it was closed was also proof that the Papuan people were able to host national level activities and become the capital for the next national activity.

"This (PON) shows how the dignity of the Papuan people has emerged. So far, many people have doubted. Today, with the PON, our dignity has increased. We are the same as other brothers and sisters," said Paulus, who is also a native of Papua.
