Herman Yoku: The Independence Day of Papua December 1 is a historical fallacy

Towards December 1 every year it is claimed as the anniversary of West Papua or the independence day of the Papuan nation, activists and sympathizers of independent Papua begin preparations to celebrate the anniversary of West Papua's independence.

Papuan People's Assembly member Herman Yoku said that this was considered wrong by him, because he is one of the witnesses to Papua's history who is still alive today.

"December 1, which has been claimed to be the Independence Day of West Papua, is a mistake and also a historical fraud that continues to be preserved to this day," Herman said when contacted, Friday (11/26/2021).

He said this had fooled a small part of the younger generation of Papuans who believed in this false history.

"Those who claim December 1 as the Independence Day of Papua are because they don't understand history, December 1 is someone from nowhere who claims to be the Anniversary of Papuan Independence," he said.

According to him, the Morning Star flag which is currently claimed to be the State Flag of West Papua is actually the flag of the Football Club from the Nafri region.

"Where in the end the Dutch wanted to leave Papua, the Dutch removed the football image and replaced it with a star and made the flag of West Papua," he said.

He added, in 1963, the Integration of Irian (Papua) into the Republic of Indonesia during the transition period of the Dutch government still did not want to leave Papua, which at that time was still the name Irian, so that in various ways the Dutch tried to disturb the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia by creating the Morning Star Flag taken from the Club Flag. Nafri football and serve as the flag of the West Papuan nation.

"This is what the younger generation today doesn't understand who still believes that December 1 is the independence of West Papua," he added.
