Let's Support Special Autonomy in Papua

Special Autonomy or Otsus is a privilege granted to two provinces, namely Papua and West Papua, to regulate affairs within the region according to their own initiatives in accordance with the basic rights and aspirations of the people in the area.

The Special Autonomy policy is basically useful and supports national policies in realizing justice and the rule of law, respect for human rights, accelerating development, the economy, and the welfare and progress of the Papuan people.

In addition, the existence of Otsus is expected to be able to equalize Papua with other provinces in Indonesia.

Chief of the Kimyak Kaptiau Tribe, Sarmi Regency, Papua, Lasarus Kimyak said that, Otsus had brought positive results both in infrastructure development and the benefits were already visible.

"I hope that Otsus Volume 2 can run better and a more proactive team can be formed to oversee each Otsus fund so that there is no misuse of the budget," said Lasarus in a written statement, Friday (18/2).

Seeing the potential of Otsus, the Sarmi Indigenous people strongly support the implementation of Otsus, because Papua still needs infrastructure development and economic development.

The Papuan people have felt the benefits of Otsus, especially in the education sector. Many Papuan children have been educated at home and abroad with special autonomy funds.

Salma Aartagrit Nadiru (active student receiving Otsus 2019) said that the sustainability of Otsus is expected to provide benefits for the welfare of the Papuan people.

"Let all youth, students, and the community fully support and guard Otsus Volume 2 for the welfare of the people of Papua and West Papua," said Salma.

Hesti Amerbay, a student from Kaimana, West Papua who studied in Makassar, gave a similar support.

"Come on, our community, youth, students, traditional leaders, and religious leaders support the implementation of Otsus for the welfare of the Papuan people," he said.
