Biak Regency Government values fisheries potential as a mainstay for foreign exports

The Biak Numfor Regency Government, Papua assesses the potential of the fisheries sector in this region is still a mainstay for exports abroad.

"In May or June 2022, Biak's fishery products will be exported to destination countries in Asia," Biak Regional Secretary Markus Mansnembra said in Biak, Monday.

The Regional Secretary said that the potential of the fisheries sector in Biak Numfor Regency every year continues to contribute to the region and the fishing community.

According to Markus, the fish caught by fishermen in Biak are well known and very natural because they depend on the potential of natural resources for the coastal communities of the Biak archipelago.

"The quality of fish products from fishermen caught on the island of Biak is well known so that the Biak Numfor Regency government through the breakthrough program of the Regent, Herry Ario Naap and the ranks of the fisheries service continue to look for export market opportunities abroad," he said.

Previously, Deputy Head of the Bank Indonesia Papua Representative Office, Dedy Irianto, supported the development of fisheries potential in Biak Numfor Regency.

"Bank Indonesia continues to encourage various natural potentials of each region to be developed in order to improve the regional economy and local Papuan communities," he said.

Biak Numfor Regency is part of the State Fisheries Management area of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI).

Some of the fishery commodities that have been sent abroad are lobster, grouper and shrimp to Jakarta, Denpasar, Makassar, Sentani, and Surabaya via Biak's Frans Kaisiepo airport. In August 2021, Biak's fishery commodities were exported to Singapore.

Fisheries sector commodities from Biak also have the potential to be exported directly to Asian countries such as China, Korea and Japan.
