PLN Plants 2,000 Mangroves to Support Biak Sburya Beach Abrasion Rehabilitation

To support the preservation of the coastal environment, PLN together with the Byak Community House rehabilitated mangrove forests at Sburya Beach, Swapodibo Village, Biak City District. By involving the village government and the surrounding community, as many as 2,000 mangrove seedlings were planted in an area of 2 hectares.

Accompanied by the Biak Numfor Protection Forest Management Unit, the development of mangroves will be monitored regularly so that they can grow strong and survive the storm. The Rp50 million assistance is a form of PLN's Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program which aims to restore a balanced coastal ecosystem.

Head of the Center for Control and Ecoregional Development (P3E) for Papua, Edward Sembiring, expressed his appreciation to all parties who supported the implementation of this mangrove rehabilitation activity. He hopes that the message to always protect the environment can be conveyed to the public, so that more and more parties are motivated to do so. “What is certain is that we strongly support this so that it can continue to be carried out. We also hope that there will be community participation to be able to jointly preserve the environment,” said Edward.

Sburya Beach was chosen as the rehabilitation location because it is located next to the runway at Biak's Frans Kaisiepo airport, which has experienced abrasion to a distance of 10 to 15 meters. Seeing this, the planting of mangrove trees is carried out so that they can withstand sea water currents and prevent further abrasion.

One of the residents of Swapodibo Village, Melkyanus Simbiak, expressed his gratitude for the coastal rehabilitation activities carried out by PLN and the Byak Community House. He said this would later be very useful in overcoming the damage in his village area. "Our hope is that in the future our beach can return to its original state because currently the condition is too damaged. We also hope that the mangrove seedlings that will grow later can become a fish house, so that if that happens our community can find fish just on the edge of the beach, they don't have to go far to the middle of the sea, "he said.

Meanwhile, the Manager of PLN's Customer Service Implementation Unit (UP3) Biak, Yakomina MW Senandi explained that this is a form of PLN's concern and efforts in maintaining environmental balance. With the synergy of various parties, in the end the planting activities can be carried out.

"We hope that in the future the conservation efforts carried out together can be sustainable. Environmental ecosystems can be balanced and marine animals also return to their habitat on the coast. That way it can make it easier for people, especially those who work as fishermen to catch fish. It is also possible that in the future Sburya Beach and its surroundings can become a tourist attraction," said Yakomina.
