The handling of the Sorong flood is in the recovery stage

The team for the acceleration of handling floods and landslides in West Papua together with the Sorong City Government agreed that the handling of floods and landslides in the local area is in the recovery stage and is no longer an emergency response.

The agreement was decided at a meeting to evaluate emergency response actions by the West Papua acceleration team and the local government of the city of Sorong in Sorong, Thursday.

Head of the West Papua Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), Dance Sangkek as Head of the Acceleration Team said that the flood emergency response period in Sorong city had been carried out for 14 days and conditions were starting to improve.

Therefore, the government no longer extends the period and emergency response activities but enters the recovery stage where it carries out disaster management activities of a recovery nature such as repairing basic infrastructure damaged by floods.

He hoped that all acceleration teams at the provincial and city levels of Sorong would focus on handling activities for post-flood recovery.

Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency or BPBD of Sorong City, Herlin Sasabone, said that the community's economic activity after the flood had started to return to normal.

Therefore, he said, emergency response activities such as public kitchens, distribution of ready-to-eat food and basic food assistance for the community were stopped and entered the recovery stage.

"The handling activities during the recovery period will focus on improving infrastructure and cleaning public facilities," he said.

Acting Mayor of Sorong, George Yarangga, who gave a separate statement, expressed his gratitude to the West Papua Provincial government for deploying an acceleration team to assist in the management of local floods and landslides, which are now entering the recovery stage.

He hopes that good cooperation and collaboration between the provincial and city governments will continue to be maintained in flood recovery activities for the better progress of Sorong City.*
