World Geopark team arrives in Raja Ampat
The UNESCO Global Geopark Secretariat team arrived in Waisai, the district capital, West Papua province, Wednesday, to conduct an assessment of the Raja Ampat district as part of a world-class Geopark.
Two guests of the UNESCO Global Geopark Secretariat, namely Mr. Charalampos Fassoulas and Mr. Alireza Amrikazemi was welcomed by the heads and staff of local government organizations and the people of Raja Ampat with the cultural tradition of Mansorandak or stamping on traditional plates.
Regent Abdul Faris Umlati said that the working visit of the two guests of the UNESCO Global Geopark Secretariat was to evaluate the plan to increase the status of the Raja Ampat Geopark which will then be judged worthy or not included in the UNESCO Global Geopark.
He explained that the UNESCO Global Geopark team will be in Raja Ampat for five days to conduct an assessment of the local Geopark.
"We hope that the Raja Ampat Geopark can become part of the UNESCO Global Geopark or the world's Geopark so that it brings prosperity to the community," said Umlati.
UNESCO Global Geopark Team, Mr. Charalampos Fassoulas, who gave a separate statement, said he was very happy to see the Raja Ampat Geopark building because even though the space was limited, it was able to display attractive and interpretive information.
In addition, the design is beautiful and charming and the information conveyed is quite relevant to the development of science and research conducted in Raja Ampat since it officially became a National Geopark in 2017.
I strongly agree with the Raja Ampat government's idea to develop the Geopark building into a learning place for tourists who come to Raja Ampat," added Fassoulas.
Please note that for five days in Raja Ampat, the evaluator team will evaluate by visiting several natural tourist attractions, namely Wayag, Arborek, Wawiyai, Pef, Piaynemo, and Warsambing.
