Wondama prepares three schemes to accelerate extreme poverty reduction

The Government of Teluk Wondama Regency in West Papua Province seeks to accelerate the reduction of extreme poverty in its region by 2023 by implementing three strategies.

In order to reduce the number of poor people, according to data from the Target for the Acceleration of the Elimination of Extreme Poverty (P3KE) as many as 2,339 people, the Teluk Wondama Regency Government has a strategy to reduce the burden of spending on the poor, increase people's income, and reduce the number of pockets of poverty.

Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency of Teluk Wondama Amirudin in Wasior, Monday, said that reducing the burden of spending on the poor was carried out, among others, by distributing social assistance and providing capture fisheries infrastructure for fishermen.

The increase in people's income, he said, was carried out by fostering and empowering Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes), developing small fishing businesses, empowering communities through the development of strategic tourism areas, as well as procuring plant seeds and livestock seeds for farmers and ranchers.

In order to reduce the number of pockets of poverty, according to him, the district government will develop tourism destinations, build 100 units of special type 45 houses, and provide transportation subsidies.

"We have implemented these three policies since this year and will continue next year, of course there will be an evaluation of the extent of their effectiveness," said Amirudin.

He emphasized the importance of re-data collection to obtain accurate data on the extreme poor, including their names, addresses, and conditions.

"Everything is done by name by address (based on name and address). For example, someone is categorized as extreme poor because he has no place to live, today the government is building a type 45 house," he said.

"If he is extremely poor because he doesn't have a job, this year the government will provide capital for corn plants as well as business capital assistance. That's what must be done," said Amirudin.

The Regent of Teluk Wondama Hendrik Mambor reminded all regional apparatus organizations to design programs and activities that can support the acceleration of extreme poverty reduction.

"We all have one commitment to reduce extreme poverty. At least we can reduce it and our target in 2024 must be zero," he said.
