Businessmen obey Customary Law in the process of land acquisition in Papua

The Head of the Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia asked employers to comply with customary law in the process of land acquisition in Papua. He also urged companies to be careful in socializing with local residents.

"Running a business in Papua is easy, as long as you enter right and right. Need special attention in the context of socialization with the people," he said, Thursday (2/27).

Land problems, said Bahlil, are the biggest obstacle to investment in Bumi Cendrawasih. Therefore, he asked the regional government to resolve the land issue so as to provide certainty to investors.

"If you take care of the land in Papua, today is finished, tomorrow he has children coming so it's not finished. The day after tomorrow he has grandchildren coming," he said.

On the other hand, he also asked employers to report to BKPM if they find unscrupulous local government officials requesting extortion. The report will be forwarded to the authorities.

In addition to land issues, he said the investment barrier in Papua is inadequate infrastructure. Not only that, security stability in Papua is also a consideration of investors.

However, he ensured that the riots in Papua would not interfere with investment because the government could still control the riots. After all, he continued, not all regions of Papua experienced riots.

Furthermore, BKPM said that investment barriers in Papua are the lack of local human resources and the lack of assistance by the local government. Employers also complained about layered taxation and interference from international and local NGOs.

For information, investment in Papua reached Rp. 15.06 trillion in 2019. In details, Foreign Investment amounted to US $ 941 million, equivalent to Rp. 14.11 trillion and Domestic Investment reached Rp. 947.9 billion.
