Menpora Promotes PON XX Papua in Indonesia Marathon

The Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) held five Indonesian editions of Marathon, from 2020 to 2024. The long distance race that began in Jakarta in August, became a promotional event for the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON).

"Of course we will make the PON promotion event. In every major event like this it will be used for (promotion) PON," said Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, when opening the launching of the Indonesia Marathon 2020 in Jakarta, Thursday (27/2).

The event is believed to attract 10 thousand participants, both domestically and abroad. Through the concept of sports tourism, continued Zainudin, this event can attract tourists.

"Thank you KONI for organizing this big event to be a tourist attraction. Kemenpora will support what is needed," he concluded.

Chairman of the KONI Center, Marciano Norman, said the Indonesia Marathon 2020 was included in the agenda of promoting tourist destinations in Indonesia. "This is the starting point for the future, marathons in Indonesia can be parallel, like the Chicago Marathon or the Tokyo Marathon," Marciano said.

Besides Jakarta, Indonesia Marathon will be held in Lombok, Belitung, Medan and Banyuwangi, for the next period. The Indonesia Marathon Committee will give billions of rupiah prizes to winners in the four contested numbers, namely marathon, Half-marathon, 10K, and 5K.

For participants who were able to break the national record of long distance athletes in the 1980s, Eduardus Nabunome with 2 hours 9 seconds achievement in the marathon number, the committee will give a special prize of Rp 1 billion.
