There are no Military Operations in Papua

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said the government would not conduct military operations to address the threat of Indonesian sovereignty in Papua, because threats in Papua could not be faced militarily.

"The second territorial threat comes from the eastern hemisphere, namely the issue of Free Papua. That cannot be faced militarily," Mahfud said at Bakamla Headquarters, Central Jakarta, Friday (2/21/2020).

According to Mahfud MD, the government must maintain human rights in Papua, must be careful in carrying out operations in Papua and West Papua. So what is done is law enforcement and security, and not military operations.

The reason, he said, the use of the term military operation is identical to human rights violations. "Because if it is called a military operation later (identical) violations of human rights. The international world will highlight that," said Mahfud.
