XX PON Held in Papua, Mahfud Make Sure Not Add Troops

The XXth National Sports Week will be held in Papua from 20 October to 2 November 2020.

Although ensuring security will be maintained, Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Mahfud MD claims there will be no increase in the number of security forces in Papua.

Mahfud said, the security forces from the TNI and Polri elements there did not need to be added in numbers.

Moreover, he said the number of security forces was enough to maintain the situation in Papua.

"No. Earlier the meeting did not, (stated that), stated that it was enough," said Mahfud in his office, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (10/3/2020).

Mahfud did not explain in detail the security meant to deal with a number of major agendas in Papua. Even if there are events that occur, he guarantees his safety under control.

"That later there were incidents, not only in Papua. People in collisions also existed in Surabaya, there were these people who also fought all kinds of things everywhere," he said.

That was said by Mahfud because it had also been mentioned about an incident in Papua that occurred, namely a battle between the authorities and the National Liberation Army of West Papua - the military wing of the OPM in Tembagapura District, Mimika.

As many as 1,000 residents from four villages in Tembagapura District had to be evacuated to Timika due to these conditions.

Mahfud claimed he did not know about the refugee problem. He left the matter to the local authorities to be resolved.

"Yes, nothing. Let it be settled there. There is a procedure there."
