PON Papua Creates Multiplier Effect for the Economy

The construction of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) venue, said Deputy Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) Eko Listyanto, could create an economic multiplier effect for the region.

"The sports infrastructure has high economic value and creates a multiplier effect," said Eko in Jakarta, Wednesday, April 21, 2021.

He gave an example of how regions, such as Jabodetabek, which are close to sports facilities and infrastructure have become economic centers. Sports infrastructure facilities are very capable of facilitating the meeting between community activities in the form of sports and the economy.

In addition, he also added, the construction of the XX PON sports venue in Papua is one of the efforts of the government to be able to even out infrastructure development, especially with regard to sports facilities and their supporters to the regions, especially outside Java, in this case Papua and East Indonesia.

"These sports venues are public facilities needed to recruit and foster regional athletes," he said.

Eko also reminded the regional government of the importance of managing and maintaining the sports venue, after the XX PON event ended.

The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has completed several construction of sports arena venues to support the XX National Sports Week (PON) event in Papua Province which will take place in 2021.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the completion of the construction of the XX PON sports venue was carried out carefully, starting from the design, construction and supervision stages while still paying attention to safety aspects which involved supervision from the Construction Safety Committee (K2 Committee).

It is hoped that the completion of the PON venue will not only be the pride of the Papuan people, but also the pride of all Indonesian people and can encourage young people, especially Papuan athletes to be more enthusiastic and excel to become champions, both in the national and international arena.
