Mayor of Jayapura: I do not reject PON

The Mayor of Jayapura, Benhur Tomi Mano, said that the Jayapura City Government (Pemkot) did not reject the holding of the National Sports Week or PON XX 2021 Papua.

"PON is still (implemented) in the city but organized by PB PON, because they are the ones who hold all the budgets," said Tomi Mano at the Jayapura Mayor's Office, Tuesday (25/5/2021).

Tomi Mano said that the Jayapura City Government was not willing to take responsibility for organizing the four-year event, because the PB PON Papua was not open about the budget.

"There is no openness (budget) from PB PON, so the City (Government) (Jayapura) has decided not to be responsible for the implementation of this PON," said Tomi Mano.

Tomi Mano said, in the implementation of the PON which will be held in October 2021, from 37 sports or sports, 22 of them were held in the capital of Papua Province.

“Jayapura City and Jayapura Regency get a budget of IDR 75 billion, while other districts get IDR 200 billion. This doesn't make sense, ”said Tomi Mano.

Tomi Mano added that the fields that have been established, especially from regional apparatus organizations or OPD within the Jayapura City Government, which are responsible for organizing PON, are asked to immediately return the funds that have been taken from PB PON Papua.

"The fields that have been established, we do not implement, but PB PON does. If there is a field that has taken money personally, I ask to return it immediately. Don't be greedy for money, but self-esteem is very important. A good name is more important, not because of money. I am Papuan and I want this PON to be successful, ”said Tomi Mano.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor of Jayapura, Rustan Saru, said that although he is not responsible for organizing PON Papua, the Jayapura City Government still prepares cleanliness, security, order, arrangement of tourist beaches, and the provision of souvenirs.

"This has become our duty and responsibility so that all athletes, officials and visitors feel happy, safe, and comfortable visiting the city of Jayapura," said Rustan.

Rustan added that all residents support and succeed in organizing PON, especially in Jayapura City.
