Mahfud Concerning Peaceful Way in Papua: KKB Not Cooperative

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said that dialogue efforts for peace in Papua have been carried out by many parties. However, only the armed criminal group (KKB) is not cooperative.

"Only a handful of KKB are not cooperative. Law enforcement against KKB must be done, because KKB destroys harmony in the midst of community peace," Mahfud said in his tweet quoted Monday (21/6).

Mahfud explained that this was in response to an accusation by a church organization that the government had never responded to a letter requesting dialogue regarding the resolution of the Papuan conflict.

This was previously conveyed by the Coordinator of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (KPKC) for the Synod of the Gospel Christian Church (GKI) in Papua, Dora Balubun.

Responding to Dora's statement, Mahfud said the government had held dialogues many times. Not only with church leaders, but also with all elements of organizational institutions in Papua, such as indigenous peoples, DPRD, and the Papuan People's Council (MRP).

Mahfud emphasized that the government is committed that Papua is part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, politically, constitutionally, and in international law.

The former judge of the Constitutional Court said the government remains committed to peacefully developing Papua. According to him, this is in accordance with Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 9 of 2020.

"The government has also had many dialogues with church leaders, traditional leaders, DPRD, MRP. The government continues to emphasize dialogue with the principles and boundaries of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia which includes Papua, which is final," Mahfud said.
