Papuan sailing athletes are optimistic about winning the PON gold medal

A total of 18 athletes in the Papua Province sailing sport are optimistic about winning a gold medal in the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) which is scheduled to take place on October 2-15, 2021.

Papua team sail coach Ferdinandus Ulnang said that various preparations, both mentally, physically, technically and strategically, were continuously improved to face PON XX Papua.

"The sailing branch is expected to be able to contribute a gold medal for the Papuan contingent at the XX PON," said Ferdinandus in Jayapura, Wednesday.

According to him, 80 percent of Papuan sailing athletes already have experience competing at the PON XIX West Java and also the 2020 Regata screen international championship which was held in Batam, Riau Islands Province.

From the results of the 2020 Regata championship, the Papuan sailing athlete contingent won two gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals from the four events competed.

"Although the opponents that will be faced in the XX Papua PON event are quite evenly distributed, have the ability, but with determination and enthusiasm as the host of XX Papua PON, athletes must be able to achieve gold medals," said Ferdinandus.

Furthermore, he mentioned the mainstay numbers of the XX Papua PON screen athletes, namely the laser class match number 4.7 and the optimistic match number.

Meanwhile, the Papua team's strong competitors, he continued, include East Kalimantan, Riau Islands and West Java Province.

"Although the potential opponents in PON XX Papua are getting stronger, as the host, Papuan athletes must be able to look their best in order to win a gold medal in sailing sports," concluded Ferdinandus.

PON XX Papua will take place on October 2-15, 2021 by competing in 37 sports in four organizing clusters, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Merauke and Mimika Regency.
