DPR Approves Proposals for 3 Papua New Guinea, Indonesia Will Have 37 Provinces

The Legislative Body (Baleg) of the DPR has ratified three draft laws (RUU) on the Formation of New Autonomous Regions (DOB) in Papua Province, namely the Bill for the Establishment of the Province of South Papua, the Bill for the Establishment of the Province of Central Papua, and the Bill for the Establishment of the Province of Central Mountains.

These three draft laws became priority bills, after going through the harmonization stage by the Panja in the Legislative Council of the DPR together with the proposer of the bill, namely Commission II of the DPR.

"Based on the technical aspects of the substance and the principle of the formation of legislation, the Panja is of the opinion that the Bill on the Province of South Papua, the Bill on the Province of Central Papua and the Bill on the Province of Papua in the Central Mountains can be submitted as a bill on the initiative of the DPR RI," said Deputy Chair of the DPR Baleg Achmad Baidowi in the DPR Baleg Plenary Meeting, Thursday (7/4/2022).
 
After inviting representatives of 9 factions in Baleg to present their mini-faction views, Baidowi asked the forum for approval of 3 bills for the formation of a new province in Papua. "After we have listened to the opinions of all factions and agreed. Can the results of the harmonization of the Bill on the Provinces of South Papua, Central Papua and Papua Central Mountains be approved?" asked the man who is familiarly called Awiek and got the approval of all the members present.

Meanwhile, Awiek explained that basically there are 7 proposals for the bill for the formation of new autonomous regions. Based on the proposal from Commission II of the DPR, there are 6 proposed bills including: Papua Province, South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Central Mountains Papua Province. Then, West Papua Province and Southwest Papua Province. Along the way, the proposal was added by one member of the Baleg DPR.
 
"That means there are 6. Then there are proposals from Baleg members for the Papuan electoral district, Mr. Yan Permenas who proposed North Papua (DOB Papua). So, there are 7 proposals in Baleg," said Awiek when confirmed, Thursday (7/4/2022).
 
However, according to the secretary of the PPP faction of the DPR, there are 3 bills that have just been processed, namely the Central Papua Bill, Central Highlands Papua, and South Papua as a result of the division of the Papua province. The other three bills will be discussed in stages.

"Because we need a study, deepening. The (expansion) of Papua, Central Papua, Central Highlands Papua, South Papua, and Papua the mother. Then later, it will be a priority, the rest will be gradual, of course after communication with stakeholders in field," he said.
