To become a new electoral district in the 2024 election, the bill for the expansion of Papua is accelerated
Commission II of the House of Representatives targets three Draft Laws (RUU) for the New Autonomous Region (DOB) for Papua to be approved for ratification in the coming months.
This was conveyed by Member of Commission II of the DPR RI, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda.
"There are three bills related to the division of Papua which are discussed by Commission II of the DPR. We are trying before June 2022, all of the bills can be approved by the DPR to be passed into law," Rifqi said, as reported by Antara, Sunday (17/4).
According to Rifqi's explanation, the formation of a new province will have an impact on adding electoral districts (dapil), as well as increasing the number of seats for members of the DPR RI who will be elected in the 2024 Election.
"The formation of electoral districts is in accordance with the mandate of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections, there will be additional seats in the DPR including additional electoral districts which must be adjusted immediately so that they are in sync with the stages of the 2024 elections that will be held," said Rifqi.
Previously, the Legislative Body of the DPR has approved three bills related to the New Autonomous Region (DOB) of Papua as a proposed initiative by the DPR in a plenary meeting held on Wednesday (6/4).
The three bills are the Bill on the Establishment of the South Papua Province, the Bill on the Establishment of the Central Papua Province, and the Bill on the Establishment of the Central Highlands Papua Province.
"The addition of a province in eastern Indonesia is intended to accelerate equitable development in Papua and to serve the Papuan people better," said DPR RI Speaker Puan Maharani in a press statement, Friday (8/4).
"The bill that regulates the division of the three new regions is also an effort to raise the dignity of the Papuan people," continued Puan.
However, there are some people who reject the expansion plan. One of the rejections was conveyed by the Coordinator of the Student Executive Board for the Nusantara Papua and West Papua, Unas G Tabuni.
In an interview with the Papua Jubi news portal, Tabuni assessed that the central government should revamp the existing provinces and districts/cities before establishing a new province in Papua.
“First, clean up the existing provinces and districts. Each stipulates a Regional Regulation that the Regent and Deputy Regent must be their own regional child, the Regional People's Representative Council must be their own regional child, civil servants and the head of service must be their own regional child. (After the division) there should be no additional TNI/Polri in Papua," Tabuni said, as reported by Jubi, Wednesday (31/3).
