Jayapura Regent Disappointed MRP Doesn't Voice the Aspirations of Residents to Support 3 New Provinces of Papua

Jayapura Regent Mathius Awoitauw asked the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) to report on the aspirations of the people who accepted the establishment of a New Autonomous Region (DOB) in Papua Province. The MRP visited Jakarta several times and met with the President, Vice President and ministers.

The Regent of Awoitauw asked the MRP not to block the aspirations of Papuans who accept the formation of the Papua New Guinea.

"It can't be done by closing the aspirations of the people who agree on the existence of a new autonomous region, then, what agenda do they (MRP) go to Jakarta on? Why don't all decisions on people's aspirations go through the mechanism of a plenary meeting or special meeting. Don't make decisions on the streets? the road," said Regent Awoitauw in Sentani, Saturday (7/5).

In the plan discussed by the government and the DPR-RI, there will be three new provinces in Papua. Namely South Papua Province, Central Papua Province and Central Highlands Papua Province.

"As a regional leader, I also want all people to be safe and prosperous. Therefore, people must accept special autonomy," said the Regent of Awoitauw.

The Jayapura Regent who is also the Chair of the Association of Forums with Regional Heads throughout Tabi said that the first step that must be understood by all parties is that the implementation of Special Autonomy (Otsus) has been ratified by the central government. He emphasized that the new autonomous region plan in Papua must be fully supported by all indigenous peoples.

The reason is, with the new autonomous system, each region can run the entire wheel of government in its own way, with its own culture and culture. In fact, it can reach all isolated places.

"We in Tabi remain a Papuan province that oversees two traditional territories, namely, Tabi and Saireri. The most important thing here is that our Papuan identity should not be lost or eroded, because of the existence of a new autonomous region," he explained.

The head of the Sarmi Regency Tribal Customary Council (DAS), Lukas Worone also stated the same thing. New autonomous regions or regional expansion are very important.

"So that all regions can determine their life choices and their government, can pay close attention to local communities. We have been waiting for this for a long time, so we continue to support the central government's plan for new autonomous regions in Papua," he said.

Disappointed with MRP

The Regent of Awoitauw expressed his disappointment with the MRP. Referring to the main tasks and functions listed in the Special Regional Regulation (Perdasus) Number 3 of 2008. The MRP can summon all regional heads in Papua to discuss all issues.

"As a regional leader, the MRP has never opened up or discussed with us. In particular, we at Tabi, in every meeting we always bring the MRP, the DPRP, to hear all the aspirations of the Tabi people, we never close ourselves off from talking to one another on the basis of public interest," he said.

One of the hopes of the Regent of Awoitauw is the serious support that is passed down through regulations for the formation of mapping of customary areas. He believes that through the mapping, people's rights can be considered to improve the welfare and economy of the residents.
