Yan Mandenas urges the Papuan community to welcome the formation of new autonomous regions

Member of Commission I DPR RI Yan Mandenas appealed to the Papuan people to welcome the formation of a new province in Papua which has been programmed by the central government in accordance with the aspirations of the Papuan people regarding the establishment of a New Autonomous Region (DOB).

The Papuan legislator thinks that it is more appropriate for the Papuan people to prepare themselves than to take part in demonstrations against some groups which are carried out for the benefit of a certain group.

According to Yan, the central government has given extraordinary attention to the Papuan people through the implementation of the Special Autonomy Law and now the formation of three new autonomous regions from the planned five provinces.

"I hope that all elements of the Papuan people, the Papuan political elite in Papua and outside Papua, will jointly succeed in the formation of new autonomous regions for the prosperity and future of the Papuan people," said Yan Mandenas, Sunday (22/5/2022).

Yan said the Papuan people should look at the expansion of the Papua province from an economic perspective.

The reason is that the benefits of the division of the province in Papua include equitable development, increased welfare, accelerated infrastructure development and shortens the vulnerability of inter-central and regional government control as well as facilitates community mobility and activities.

"I have repeatedly said that we accept expansion by looking at it from an economic perspective, not from a political perspective. Because the consequences from a political perspective will remain only for political consumption, so that it becomes the pros and cons of various demonstrations by certain groups at this time," said Yan Mandenas.

Mandenas admitted that the DPR RI had received a Presidential Letter (Surpres) from the government regarding the discussion of the three New Autonomous Regions (DOB) in Papua. These are related to the Draft Law (RUU) concerning the South Papua Province (Ha Anim Customary Area), the Bill on the Central Papua Province (Mee Pago Customary Region), and the Bill on the Central Highlands Papua Province (Lapago Customary Region).

The Surpres was given to the DPR after it was ratified as a bill proposed by the DPR at the Plenary Meeting on Tuesday (12/4/2022).

With the Surpres, the President of the Republic of Indonesia assigned the relevant ministries/institutions as government representatives to discuss together with the DPR's Completeness Toolkit (AKD) assigned to the Deliberative Body Meeting (Bamus) of the DPR RI.

"The DPR has also received points that will be discussed in the form of an Inventory List of Problems (DIM) for the Bill for the Establishment of the Newborn. Several ministers have been sent, such as the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of National Development Planning Agency, Minister of PAN-RB, and Minister of Finance who will participate in discussing together DPR," concluded Yan Mandenas.
