West Papua will soon have a Perdasus on the Intellectual Property Rights of Indigenous Papuans
West Papua Province in the near future will soon have a Special Regional Regulation (Perdasus) on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (HAKI) of Indigenous Papuans (OAP).
Head of the Regional Research and Development Agency (Balitbangda) of the West Papua Regional Secretariat, Prof. Dr. Charlie D Heatubun in Manokwari, said the material for the Perdasus IPR OAP was just waiting for approval to be implemented immediately.
"Just waiting for it to be ratified, because the process has been completed and has been registered at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Jakarta," said Charlie.
He said the Perdasus mandated the establishment of an Intellectual Property Rights Office under the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) which would take care of intellectual property rights, both individual and communal.
The Perdasus HAKI OAP in West Papua, he said, has gone through processes at the regional and central levels.
In addition to providing protection for trademarks, individual patents, the Perdasus will also provide protection for communal ownership such as copyrights and others.
"We hope that the Intellectual Property Rights Office will adopt the concept of one-stop management, which will collaborate with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to place their employees. When the public comes to register their intellectual property rights, it will be managed in one place," explained Charlie.
