Acting Regent of Nduga encourages increased freshwater fish farming

Acting Regent of Nduga Namia Gwijangge hopes that there will be an increase in freshwater fish cultivation in the local area which can boost the economic performance of the community.

According to him, freshwater fish farming is important as a new source of protein, considering that fish is a rare food commodity in mountainous areas such as Nduga.

"We in mountainous areas rarely consume fresh fish," said Namia in a release received in Jayapura, Monday.

According to Namia, currently the need for fish is still being met from the Jayapura area and its surroundings, so that through the cultivation of freshwater fish, the need for fish no longer needs to be met from outside the region.

"For that we need more freshwater fish farming groups, especially since the mountainous area is quite large," he said.

He also ensures that freshwater fish farming can also become a new source of economy if the aquaculture groups are able to manage them properly.

"The potential of fisheries is extraordinary, for that through development activities and assistance to aquaculture groups, we hope to provide a source of income in the fishery sector," he said.

In addition, this cultivation also aims to provide knowledge related to fisheries business management so that later it can provide a source of income.

"We just have to change our consumption mindset, so we have to learn a lot from groups that have succeeded and get help with fish seeds and training. First, we have to set an example for other fishery businesses," said Namia.
