DPRD Approves the Change of the Name of Puncak Regency

Puncak Regency changed its name to Puncak Papua Regency. The name change was agreed at the plenary meeting of the Puncak DPRD which was held in Timika on Friday (8/7/2022).

Puncak Regency, with the capital city Ilaga, was a division of Puncak Jaya Regency in 2018. The plenary meeting of the Puncak DPRD was chaired by the Chair of the Puncak DPRD, Lukius Newegalen, which was attended by the Regent of Puncak, Willem Wandik, members of the council and leaders of the Regional Apparatus Organization (OPD).

The chairman of the Puncak DPRD, Lukius Newegalen explained that the name change was a new history for Puncak Regency since it was split from the main Puncak Jaya regency in 2008. "This means that this name has been used for 14 years and finally it was changed to Puncak Papua Regency," he explained, Saturday (9/7/2022). ).

This politician from Gerindra explained that sociologically the name change was the people's aspiration to the local government, so the DPRD responded. "Finally, the DPRD conducted a study and approved the name change to Puncak Papua Regency," he explained.

Meanwhile, Puncak Regent Willem Wandik said the name change was to emphasize and distinguish the mention of the name Puncak Regency from the names of similar districts.
"The name Puncak is common, there are Puncak Bogor, Puncak Jaya or Puncak Trikora. Sometimes people outside Papua are confused about the position of the name Puncak Regency. However, changing the name to Puncak Papua will be more specific to regencies in Papua Province," he said.

Even according to the Regent of Wandik, he is sometimes referred to as the Regent of Puncak Jaya. In fact, from Puncak Regency.

"With this name change, the DPRD will then consult with the province and the Ministry of Home Affairs to make it a Government Regulation (PP) on changing the name of Puncak Regency to Puncak Papua," he said.
