West Papua holds an esport competition to celebrate the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day
Acting Governor of West Papua Paulus Waterpauw plans to hold an electronic sports competition (esport) to celebrate the 77th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence this year.
While chairing a preparatory meeting to welcome the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia at the West Papua Province level in Manokwari, Thursday, Waterpauw said that esports is currently a sport loved by millennials, including in West Papua. Even esports has become a sport that is competed in the PON and SEA Games events.
"This esport has now been contested in PON and SEA Games. It can be accommodated because millennials are now good at it," he said.
Seeing the proliferation of esports communities and groups in West Papua, according to the Governor, this is a good opportunity to empower millennials in the area.
"The competition that is being put forward now is millennial children so that they don't go the wrong way, what we want to prepare are potential children so that tomorrow they will become ambassadors for the region and the country," said Waterpauw.
Besides esports, another competition planned by the West Papua Provincial Government is a hip-hop music competition which is a favorite of young people, especially for the West Papua region.
"Hip-hop music or rap that sings back to each other, if we announce it, they will definitely practice seriously if necessary between schools, it will be very interesting," he said.
