IPB's expert team helps develop Kaimana's fishery potential

The government of Kaimana Regency, West Papua, brought in a number of experts from the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) to help develop a master plan for the area's Integrated Marine and Fisheries Center (SKPT).

The Kaimana Regent, who was contacted by Antara from Manokwari, Monday, said that a team of experts from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) of IPB, all of whom had the title of professor, had arrived in Kaimana since Friday (5/8) to together with the local government prepare the Kaimana Regency SKPT master plan.

The IPB expert team consisted of Mulyono S Baskoro, an expert on Fisheries Resource Utilization, Sugeng Hari Wisudo, an expert on Marine Technology, Syamsul Bahri Agu, an expert on Sensors and Marine GIS Geospatial Modeling, Mochammad Riyanto an expert on Fishing Technology and Fish Behavior, and Irza Effendi an expert on Aquaculture.

"Thank you to the FPIK IPB Team for seriously helping the Kaimana Regional Government to manage the fisheries potential in Kaimana," said Freddy.

The number one person in Kaimana Regency said that his area had been known as the kingdom of fish because of the huge fishery potential in Kaimana.

Ironically, the abundant fishery potential in Kaimana does not have a significant impact on Regional Original Income (PAD) and community welfare because the management of this fishery potential has not been carried out professionally.

"Hopefully with the help of the Team (FPIK IPB) to compile the SKPT master plan document in Kaimana, in the future we will have a good planning document as a guide for the region in managing and developing the fishery potential that we have," Freddy hoped.

Freddy admits that one of the obstacles every time he asks for help from the Central Government to develop SKPT in Kaimana is the absence of academically accountable planning documents.

"It's not only the master plan that we don't have, we also don't have complete fishery data. Even though this is a basic thing that must be owned. Moreover, fisheries and marine affairs are one of Kaimana's leading sectors," said Freddy, who has a background as an entrepreneur.

As soon as they set foot in Kaimana, which is known as the 'Twilight City' country, the FPIK IPB Team immediately held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Fisheries Service of the Kaimana Regency Government, UPTD KKPD Kaimana, Indonesian Conservation and a number of fishery business actors in Kaimana.

The meeting which took place at the Grand Papua Kaimana Hotel was intended to gather information and supporting data.

Furthermore, the FPIK IPB team visited the fishery area in Kaimera Siawatan in the District of Teluk Etna, Teluk Triton and Namatota Village.

At that location, the team also explored the data needed in the preparation of the Kaimana SKPT master plan document.

After returning to Kaimana City, the FPIK IPB Team held an audience with Kaimana Regent Freddy Thie who was accompanied by Kaimana Secretary Donald R Wakum.

During the meeting with the Regent Freddy Thie, a number of topics were discussed, including planning for freshwater, brackish and seawater fish farming.
