Michael Gomar: Stunting Prevention Needs Serious Attention All Parties

The Education Office of Mappi Regency, South Papua, carried out the Education and Training activity to Increase the Competence of Early Childhood Education Educators in Nutrition Sensitive Early Situations to accelerate stunting reduction in Mappi 2022, Friday (26/8/2022).

The event was attended by four resource persons from the Directorate of PAUD Teachers and Dikmas Kemendikbudristek namely, Agung Nugroho Marey, Ali Nugraha, Sheba Sri Dwide and Dr. Zukhairina.

The activity was opened by the Acting Regent of Mappi Michael R. Gomar in the Hall of the Education Office, and was attended by Plt. Head of Education Office, Head of Health Office, Head of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Office, Head of PKK and training participants.

This training will last for five days and 65 participants, consisting of 13 kindergartens in Mappi, will take part in this activity.

The acting Regent of Mappi Michael R Gomar in his speech said that the training carried out was a very important and priority activity, so we should be grateful because God has opened the way.

Stunting is one of the national programs mandated to be implemented in all provinces and districts/cities.

"This program is a central government policy to be implemented and is required for all districts/cities, by looking at regional conditions and existing national problems, so that stunting becomes a central government policy and must be implemented in all districts/cities," he said.

Gomar explained that stunting greatly affects the quality of a child's growth and development to become an adult, and to form reliable human resources.

Specifically in Mappi Regency and Papua in general, the growth and development of children after 1,000 days of growth is very retarded, and has been in effect for quite a long time.

“This means that when the mother gives birth and there is no good attention, especially nutrition, our children, especially Papuan children in the villages, will experience poor nutritional conditions . And this has not only been going on for a year or two, but has been going on for quite a while,” he said.

Therefore, stunting prevention is not the responsibility of the Health Service and the government in general, but is a shared responsibility, both the government and the community.

Stunting prevention requires serious attention from all parties, and requires joint collaboration, so that stunting can be minimized.

“The role of the teacher at the village and district level is very important, because it is the teacher who teaches children at school age from early childhood, kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school levels. Even from the child's growth and development age, teachers have received information about how children can be healthy,” he explained.

He hopes that with this training, specifically the acceleration of stunting reduction in Mappi can be carried out, and participants who take part in this activity can follow well.

"And in the future, hopefully it can be implemented and implemented in all communities at the village and district levels," he added.
