MIPI Papua: Special Autonomy Instrument for strategy to accelerate development

The Papuan Government Science Society (MIPI) said that Special Autonomy (Otsus) was an instrument that could be used as a strategy to achieve accelerated development in the province nicknamed "Bumi Cenderawasih".

Chairman of MIPI Papua Muhammad Musa'ad in a statement submitted to ANTARA, in Jayapura, Sunday (28/8) said that the development of Papua is not easy in the context of equity and justice.

"This is because the area of Papua is very wide, which is 319,036.05 square kilometers or 16.64 percent of the total area of Indonesia with very difficult geographical and topographical conditions," he said.

Therefore, according to him, communication, coordination, supervision and control are needed to leverage the acceleration of development in Papua. "In addition, there is an uneven distribution of the population," he said.

As a result, he said, the service relationship between the government and citizens is difficult, local conditions are diverse, and the process of cultural acculturation between local communities is the result.

"For this reason, a priority program for the 2019-2023 Papua development is made, which is the commitment of the Papuan Provincial Government in responding to the challenges and strategic issues of Papua's development," said Muhammad Musa'ad.

Previously, a webinar with the theme “Opportunities and Challenges After the Establishment of 3 New Provinces” was opened by the General Chairperson of MIPI Bahtiar who is also the Director General (Dirjen) of Politics and General Government (Pol & PUM) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri). The activity was attended by academic experts and bureaucrats, namely Muhammad Musa'ad as Assistant for Development and Welfare of Papua, Velix Vernando Wanggai as Executive Secretary of BPJ Otsus and Prof (Research) Siti Zuhro as Researcher of the BRIN Center on Saturday (27/8).
