Ministry of Home Affairs Targets Perpu for Elections to Accommodate Papua Newborns to Be Completed This Month

The Director General of Politics and General Administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Bahtiar, is targeting the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) related to Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections to be completed before next October, to accommodate the 2024 General Election in the new autonomous region (DOB) of Papua.

"Yes (before October), there are no problems. In principle, the draft is actually ready. The initial draft is ready," said Bahtiar at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Thursday 1 September 2022.
 
He said that his party would formulate the draft first, and then listen to input from the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU), the Indonesian General Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) and the Election Organizing Honorary Council (DKPP). After that, it will be continued by reporting to Commission II of the DPR RI.

"Later we invite the secretariat of Commission II, we will also report back later," he said.

He then added, "In principle, the government must first tidy up".

Bahtiar said the process was basically quite simple so it was hoped that it would be completed before October, namely adding an attachment about the expansion of the Papua New Guinea in the Election Law.
 
"The Article 20 (Election Law) orders are new areas, namely the expansion of Central Papua, South Papua, Papua Mountains, later also Southwest Papua, if it becomes a law, the order will be included in the 2024 general election and local elections," he said.

On Wednesday 31 August, Chairman of Commission II of the DPR RI Ahmad Doli Kurnia said Commission II of the DPR approved the issuance of a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) to accommodate changes to existing provisions in Law No. new autonomy in Papua.

"Commission II of the DPR together with the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri), KPU, Bawaslu, and DKPP approved the issuance of a Perppu as an amendment to several provisions in the Election Law," said Doli in a Working Meeting (Raker), Wednesday.
