West Papua instructs district/city education offices to prevent bullying of students

The West Papua Provincial Education Office instructed the heads of the district and city education offices to prevent cases of student bullying because it could have a negative impact on children's mental development.

Head of West Papua Education Office Bernabas Dowansiba in Manokwari, Monday, said the recent bullying case that happened to a student at SD Negeri 35 Sanggeng, Manokwari should be the responsibility of the school.

"If the incident occurred while the child was in school, then it is entirely the responsibility of the school, in this case the principal and the teacher council. It's a different story if it happened outside school hours," said Dowansiba.

To prevent similar cases from happening again, the West Papua Education Office asked the heads of the district/city Education Offices to be diligent in monitoring schools to find out the condition of their respective schools, including various problems in the field of education in schools.

Dowansiba expects schools to anticipate potential cases of bullying against their students and immediately follow up on reports from parents if children experience similar incidents.

"The school's role is very large in shaping the character of children, not only in educating, but also in shaping the character and directing students," he said.

Dowansiba emphasized that bullying cases at the school level must be prevented because it will have a negative impact on the psychological development of children.

"This is talking about basic education, lest the consequences of bullying interfere with children's psychology. If this incident can happen, then there is clearly omission," said Dowansiba.

Steps that can be taken by parents of students whose children are victims of bullying, said Dowansiba, can transfer their children to another school so that the child's growth and development process is not disrupted.

"If you stay in the same school, then the child will definitely limit himself so he can't be creative and will definitely be more closed," he said.

The case of bullying that happened to a student at SD Negeri 35 Sanggeng, Manokwari, was revealed after the victim's parents, Bagus Wicaksono, expressed disappointment with the school's response when they were reported on what had happened to their son.

Bagus said that his son, who was in grade 2 of elementary school, was sick. The victim suffered bruising on his pelvis and a tear on his lower lip.

The victim admitted to her parents that she was beaten by her friends.
