Fuel Price Increase, MUI Deputy: Implementation of Pancasila Economy, Form of Benefit

Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Marsudi Syuhud spoke about the news about the planned increase in subsidized fuel prices.

He believes that the increase in fuel prices will bring good to society and the country. Because, by doing so, the subsidy budget prepared by the government will be much more targeted.

In the end, according to Marsudi, government policies will bring benefit and goodness to the people. "The target of the fuel price adjustment is the benefit and goodness of the people, especially those who need it most," he said in an official statement, Friday, September 2, 2022.

He explained that the increase in fuel prices was the government's best decision because it moved decision-making to a direction that was far more concerned with benefit. It is also an implementation of the Pancasila economy. "The essence of the Pancasila economy is benefit."

Not only that, said Marsudi, the government needs to look at other issues as material for consideration in making energy policies. One of them is limited resources.

These resources include state financial resources. According to him, if there are other needs that are no less important than the fuel subsidy, the State Budget (APBN) will be much more useful if diverted to that. Therefore, the government and the DPR need to continue to discuss what problems should be resolved first.
 
The PBNU administrator also appealed to the government to seriously monitor the practice of providing fuel subsidies so that they are not corrupted by certain individuals. "The readiness of infrastructure is one of the keys to the right target of subsidy," he said.

The discourse of adjusting subsidized fuel prices has been widely heard recently. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, has conveyed the signal for an increase in subsidized fuel prices since last Tuesday, August 30, 2022. However, he said, the government is still finalizing the plan to increase the price of pertalite and diesel fuel.

Meanwhile, President Jokowi until yesterday said that the government was still making calculations in the policy regarding prices and restrictions on the consumption of subsidized fuel.
