Dozens of Marind's children will receive education in Russia

A total of 29 sons and daughters of the Marind – the indigenous people of Merauke Regency, South Papua, will receive undergraduate (S1) and postgraduate (S2) education in a number of cities in Russia, Eastern Europe in 2023.

One of the prospective Masters students, Fransina Kaize told Jubi, Friday (25/11/2022), stated that she would continue her Masters degree in intercultural education at St Petersburg University, Petersburg City, Russia.

Fransina said that they (29 sons and daughters from the Merauke region) who received education in Russia were paid for by the Merauke Regency Government. The local government is working with the Papua Language Institute (PLI) as a foundation that provides coaching and training for nine months in Jayapura, Papua.

“I chose Russia because I wanted to develop a language other than English. My undergraduate educational background is English. I also learned French. In the future while studying, I want to learn Russian. Russia is one of the greatest countries in the world," said Fransina after following directions in the auditorium of the Merauke regent's office.

Fransina said that there were 29 people who were going to Russia, consisting of 26 prospective undergraduate students and three prospective postgraduate students. They will be spread across various universities in Russia.

"The support from the Merauke Regency Government is a motivation for us Marind children. I hope that in the future the local government can increase the quota for native Papuan children, and we Papuan children must be able to take this golden opportunity," he concluded.

Assistant III of the Regional Secretariat of Merauke Regency, Suhono Suryo, in his direction representing the Regent Romanus Mbaraka, conveyed a number of important messages to prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students who were originally going to go to Russia.

"Tomorrow (Saturday), the regent will be present to give directions to the younger siblings. However, he did convey a number of messages to younger siblings and also the PLI," said Suryo.

Suryo said that both prospective students and the PLI needed to prepare all administrative files well before the departure process, so as not to cause problems later on.

"Young children are also expected to maintain their health, comply with the health protocols set by the Russian state. The regent also advised younger siblings to be more active in their studies, to maintain the good name of Merauke Regency, nation and state while in Russia," added Suryo.
