Law on the Expansion of Southwest Papua is Passed, DPR Supports For Equitable Development

The DPR RI passed the Draft Law on the New Autonomous Region (DOB) for Southwest Papua Province to become law. The Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, Puan Maharani, hopes that with the passing of the Southwest Papua Formation Law, the welfare of the people in Cenderawasih Land will increase.

The ratification of the Law on the Formation of the Southwest Papua Province was carried out at the 10th DPR Plenary Meeting for Session Period II for the 2022-2023 Session Year, which was held at Nusantara II Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday (17/11), the meeting was chaired directly by Mrs.
 
Decision making on the Bill on the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province began with the reading of a report from the leadership of Commission II of the DPR RI. Then Puan asked for approval from the board members.

"Agreed," answered the members of the DPR RI in unison while clapping their hands.

The Southwest Papua Province will include Sorong City, Sorong Regency, South Sorong Regency, Raja Ampat Regency, Tambrauw Regency and Mamberamo Regency. This new province will have a capital city in Sorong.

For your information, the division of the Southwest Papua Province was carried out because human development in the area was still lagging behind. Puan hopes that the formation of the Southwest Papua Province will accelerate development in the region.

"The DPR RI hopes that the formation of the Southwest Papua Province will further improve the welfare of the local community. The DPR supports this law so that there is an even distribution of development in Papua," he said.
 
"Infrastructure in areas that include Southwest Papua must also be developed quickly to support the improvement of people's welfare so that the human development index in this province will be more advanced," continued Puan.

The former Coordinating Minister for PMK also said that the ratification of the Law on the Establishment of the Southwest Papua Province would support the smooth running of the 2024 Simultaneous Election stages.

Puan asked the government to quickly complete a government regulation in lieu of law (perppu) as an implication of the formation of a number of new autonomous regions in Papua.

"Hopefully the formation of a new province in Papua will improve our democratic system and bring Indonesia forward," he added.
