The Ministry of Transportation Promotes the Papuan Economy Through Sea Transportation Shipping

The Ministry of Transportation through the Directorate General of Sea Transportation continues to encourage the progress of sea transportation in the Papua region. This time, the Directorate of Navigation will immediately determine the shipping lanes entering the Fakfak Port in West Papua Province.

Fakfak Port currently functions as a collector and distribution of goods through the sea toll program as well as passengers through shipping routes for Indonesian ships entering Fakfak port, including KM Tatamailau, KM Ciremai, and KM Nggapulu which are operated by PT. Pelni.

This was conveyed by the Director of Navigation, Hengki Angkasawan when opening the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) Plan for the Determination of Shipping Lines Entering the Fakfak Port of West Papua Province, in Bogor, Thursday (3/11).

"Sea transportation both between regencies and districts still plays an important role in the mobilization of goods and people, given the geographical conditions and the economic conditions of the people," said Hengki.

Hengki explained that Fakfak Port has a pier that is 120 meters long and 12 meters wide. With the increasing need for raw materials and manufacturing, as well as increasing trading activities, it is necessary to develop ports, especially to accommodate loading and unloading activities of goods and the construction of seaport terminals as passenger facilities. The shipping activities in Fakfak district include, archipelago shipping, pioneering, and people's shipping.

"Fakfak Port has three piers, based on the existing conditions the container moorings cannot be used due to insufficient depth and the danger of navigation in the form of corals in the front position of the pier so that container ships are diverted to mooring at Pier II," said Hengki.
