Mahfud MD said that the decision regarding the division of the Papua province was decided because it was mandated by Law number 21 of 2001 concerning Special Autonomy for Papua.

He said there were a number of alternative provinces to be divided up, starting from four, six to seven provinces. Even so he said the Minister of the Interior Tito Karnavian who will explain in detail related to this matter.

"The second is about the division of the Papua region. It was decided, the details of which will be explained by the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Tito Karnavian, whether there will be six provinces, four provinces, seven provinces, there are alternatives. In addition, at the meeting the Government also decided to extend the distribution of special autonomy funds (Otsus) to Papua. "This decision regarding two matters, one, the special autonomy fund will be extended with a new law because the validity period will expire in 2021. This means that the law must be prepared from now on," said Mahfud MD.

The President instructed his ranks of ministers to consult the issue of special autonomy (Otsus) in Papua and West Papua with components of the local community. This was conveyed by the president in a limited meeting to discuss the Papua Special Autonomy Fund at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Wednesday (03/11/2020).

"Talk to the public figures. Religious leaders in Papua. So the best policy can be formulated that will make Papua and West Papua more advanced," said President Joko Widodo.

The rules for Papua's Special Autonomy funds will end in 2021. From 2002 to 2000, the Special Autonomy Fund disbursed by the Central Government to Papua reached Rp 94.24 trillion. The President asked in making a new regulation on Papua's Special Autonomy, which contains Papua Special Autonomy Fund, bringing new enthusiasm and paradigm.

Before discussing further Papua Special Autonomy, the President ordered his line of ministers to evaluate the management of the previous Special Autonomy fund. This is to kill whether the special autonomy funds provided so far have actually been used for the benefit of the people of Papua.
