MUI Papua Appeals Citizens Not Going Home

Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of Papua Province K.H. Alpayage Syaiful Islami Alpayage urges people in the area to obey the government's advice not to go home to prevent the spread of the new corona virus (COVID-19).

"I invite the public not to travel outside Papua or vice versa, because it is very feared that the spread of the corona virus," he said in Jayapura on Thursday.

It is better, he said, to stay at home during the corona virus pandemic in the hope of breaking the chain of transmission that has become increasingly massive lately.

"If we love ourselves, our family, and our friends, let's stay at home. We can make friends with our family by utilizing social media, such as Whatsapp, 'video calls', and so on," he said.

Friendship, he continued, does not have to be done face to face or meet. "But we as a society and as children of the nation must obey the calls made by the government and security forces," he said.

The government and the intensive security apparatus appeal to the community to limit activities outside the home, avoiding crowds, not carrying out activities that bring people in.

"This is done to break the chain of the spread of the corona virus. We also urge the public to take care of themselves, adopt a healthy lifestyle so that they are not infected. We can fight and avoid the corona virus and we can even root it down when we obey the government's recommendations, "he said.

He also asked the public to pay close attention to the news, especially related to the COVID-19 pandemic, so as not to become victims of hoaks.

"And to the whole community not to be affected and spread the news with unclear sources that can cause unrest in the community. If there is information that is unclear the source can contact the local police," he said.
