Conflict of Armed Conflict KKB Papua and TNI-Polri

The firefight between the TNI-Polri apparatus and the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) has frequently occurred in the Papua region since April 2021, particularly in Ilaga District, Puncak Jaya Regency.

Based on police records, currently there are still 150 KKB militants residing in the Papua region.

They are thought to be divided into nine groups spread over several regions. It's just that, until now the officers who are members of the Nemangkawi Task Force (Satgas) operation have not been able to end the armed conflict with the KKB on Cenderawasih Earth.

Head of the Nemangkawi Public Relations Task Force, Kombes Iqbal Alqudusy, admitted that a number of problems are still being faced by the joint forces. For example, geographic conditions and terrain that are difficult to reach.

"Currently they are monitored that IT has fled and retreated to the Kuyawage area of ​​the Lanny Jaya region, and TNI-Polri forces have succeeded in controlling the Puncak area of ​​Papua," said Iqbal.

In addition, Iqbal said there were still many people who had provided information and protection to KKB members so that they were considered to be hindering the pursuit process.

Not to mention, said Iqbal, KKB often used the community as life shields so that it was difficult for the authorities to take action. This sympathizer, he said, became one of the difficulties for his party to catch the KKB.

The authorities raided the KKB headquarters in Mayuberi Village on Sunday (16/5).

In that incident, two members of the KKB were shot dead and one other person was injured even though he managed to escape. The police also got a number of their weapons, ranging from long rifles to other traditional weapons such as arrows.

That effort is not without cause. This is because since April the KKB has been suspected of being responsible for the shooting of civilians and security forces.

This incident sparked a response from the government, which immediately labeled the KKB a terrorist organization. This was done to facilitate hunting and break the financing mechanism for this separatist group.

In mid-May, the KKB even attacked a series of attacks on TNI soldiers in several areas. For example, on Tuesday (18/5), four members of the TNI suffered gunshot wounds while crossing the Bintang Mountains District, Papua.

At that time, there were about 12 TNI soldiers passing by. They were ambushed by the KKB because the car in which the engine was traveling was dead. The shooting then injured Serka Dian Hardiana and Praka Kuku Ismail from Infantry Battalion 310 / KK, Serda Sukrisdianto Yonif and Pratu Romi from Infantry Battalion 403 / WP injured.

Two personnel from the Satgas Pamrahwan Yonif PR 432 / WSJ were hacked to death by an unknown person (OTK) who was suspected of being a KKB in the Yahukimo area on the same day. Two weapons of the officers were seized.

The series of attacks that never subsided were driven by the labeling of the KKB as a terrorist group. The West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) - a wing of the armed separatist movement in Papua - stated that it was ready to go to war with the authorities.

"TPNPB needs weapons. So the goal is clear, the national liberation war for the Papuan people must move. So be prepared to try and find a way," said TPNPB-OPM Spokesperson, Sebby Sambom, Tuesday (18/5).

Not only through gun wars, OPM itself has stated that it will sue the labeling of its group as terrorists at the International Court of Justice (ICC).

The ICC is the main judicial body of the United Nations (UN) whose main function is to adjudicate and resolve disputes between member countries.

"We are ready to submit this matter to international law for a judicial review," Sebby said at the end of last April.

OPM believes that it has the power of law in the Papua region so far. According to Sebby, the actions taken by his party so far are part of the struggle to defend his own country.
