Conflict with the KKB Terrorist Group Creates Stagnation in Papua

The government's move to declare the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) or the West Papua National Liberation Army of the Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) as a terrorist organization is considered appropriate.

"Strongly agree to label this organization as a terrorist organization," said International Law Expert, Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana while speaking in the webinar 'Handling Conflict in Papua After the Establishment of an Armed Criminal Group (KKB) as a Terrorist Organization' in Jakarta, Friday (7/5/2021 ).

The Chancellor of General Achmad Yani University also emphasized that the separatist actions carried out by OPM are a threat and must be eliminated once and for all.

"This organization must be resolved properly and in accordance with the characteristics of its military because it has troubled Papuans for a long time. The resolution must also be resolved slowly in a constructive and time-bound manner considering the level of difficulty of the conflict. The approach should not be a priority for the government. Reducing the important gap in Papua. , "said Hikmahanto.

The Deputy Coordinator for Intelligence and Security, Bimmas and Obvitnas Kemenkopolhukam, Brigadier General TNI Iriyanto indicated that the OPM did not move alone. "They are a lot of friends from other front organizations who are used as a springboard so that they can self-sustain the organization and also coordinate their attacks," said Iriyanto.

The interesting fact, added Iriyanto, is that OPM also uses social media technology to spread the situation and also the terror campaign they are running to the outside world. "The failure of the PON and also the national activities that the government wanted to carry out was also their fault," he said.

This organization, he added, was no longer worthy of being considered by the KKB because there had been so many acts of violence. The conflict with KKB and OPM has also created the stagnation that has so far suffered Papua.

"This clear evidence is a sign that this organization is a major threat to Indonesia. The MPR and DPR Commission I decisions that will resolve this conflict by military operation are correct," said another speaker, the Head of the Center for Terrorism and Radicalism Studies at the Police Academy. , Kombes Pol Firman Fadillah.

However, efforts to resolve the existence of this OPM must also be careful. "The government must take a comprehensive approach and operation so as not to harm other parties, one of them civilians," said military and intelligence observer Susaningtyas Kertopati.

The former member of the DPR added that there must be a spirit of resolving this conflict with a cool head but still being thorough so that it can be resolved effectively.

"Culture also plays a strong role, so it is better if an approach is based on a communicative spirit so that it can be completed in accordance with each corridor," said Susaningtyas.
