Mahfud: Only 8 Percent of Papuans Reject Otsus Continues

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD claims that only eight percent of the Papuan people reject special autonomy (autonomy) in the easternmost region of Indonesia.
This figure is based on a survey by the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) with a number of universities in Indonesia.

In the survey, there were 92 percent of Papuans supporting the development of Papua and every one of the NKRI. Of the 92 percent, 82 percent agreed that the special autonomy to continue, while the other 10 percent left it entirely to the government.

"(The 10 percent) means that they also agree, and the remaining eight percent who refuse," Mahfud said through a video on the Indonesian Polhukam YouTube account, Friday (28/5).

Mahfud said that eight percent of the people who rejected the special autonomy group consisted of three groups. They are political groups, clandestine and armed criminals.

"The smallest one is this KKB," he said.

The former head of the Constitutional Court (MK) said that this group is currently being fought by TNI-Polri troops.

"So what is being faced is the KKB Egianus Kagoya, KKB Lekagak Talenggen, KKB Murib Military, and other groups, so it is not KKB Papua" he said.

Previously, the National Police had suspected that the extension of the Papua Special Autonomy policy was one of the triggers for the KKB or OPM to carry out various attacks in recent times.

Assistant to the Chief of Police for Operations (Asops), Inspector General Imam Sugianto, said the separatist group fighting for Papuan independence was beginning to be disturbed by the government's special autonomy policy.

"Yesterday there was an increase in the escalation of incidents, because this is indeed closer to the enactment of Otsus," said Imam when contacted CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (27/4) night.
