KONI Guarantees PON Papua Will Run Safely

ANSWERing doubts over the security of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) following the recent disturbances in Papua caused by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB).

The chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Center Marciano Norman assured that the Papua PON will run safely and smoothly.

Having coordinated with the Papuan Police and the Cenderawasih Regional Military Commander, Marciano emphasized that later the security of the Papua PON implementation would be fully supported by the Papuan Police and the Cenderawasih Regional Military Commander.

"Regarding the security situation that has been worrying me because of the dynamics in Papua, which is very dynamic, I have received full support from the Papua Police Chief, as well as the Cenderawasih Regional Military Commander," said Marciano, at the Office of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (8/6). ).

"Which they will optimally carry out security activities to ensure that this PON can take place safely and smoothly," he continued.

He also revealed that the National Police Chief and the TNI Pamglima also fully support the security of the Papua PON implementation. So he considered there was no need to worry about security in Papua later. "Previously the TNI Commander and the National Police Chief had also arrived in Papua to ensure that everything went according to our plan," said Marciano.

"We will continue to coordinate, later in the near future we will also conduct visits to Papua for implementation monitoring. And at the right time, the Minister of Youth and Sports will also check the full readiness of Papua," he explained.

As can be seen, the implementation of the Papua PON will be held on October 2-15 2021, later there will be around 6,484 athletes who will take part in the national sports event.

Competing 37 sports, consisting of 56 sports disciplines, and 679 match numbers, the Papua PON is planned to be held in four clusters, namely the Mimika cluster, the Merauke cluster, the Jayapura Regency cluster, and the Jayapura City cluster.
