Minister of Communication and Information: PON Papua will be supported by good telecommunications

The Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G Plate, said that the implementation of the National Sports Week (PON) in Papua in October will receive good telecommunications support.

"Telecommunication support during the implementation of PON can still be carried out properly because the recovery of the submarine cable has been completed," said Jhonny in a press conference that was held virtual, Monday.

He said the recovery of the Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) submarine cable network for the Biak-Jayapura section will be completed in June, so that when PON is held, the telecommunications network in Bumi Cenderawasih has returned to normal.

Furthermore, he said, Kominfo will also coordinate across cellular operators in order to support the availability of sufficient bandwidth for the implementation of PON in Papua.

"We hope that the deployment of this optical cable can be completed so that support for data transmission to and from Papua can take place well," said Johnny.

Previously, there was a telecommunications disruption in Jayapura due to the cable communication system belonging to PT Telkom Indonesia for the Biak-Jayapura section that broke on April 30.

From the results of the temporary investigation, the break in the submarine cable was caused by natural factors.

"I can confirm that the cable break in this is completely a technical problem, not a non-technical factor," said Johnny.

The total capacity affected by the breakdown of the submarine cable network is 154 Gbps. The total normal traffic throughout Papua is 464 Gbps. A total of four regions experienced service disruptions, namely in Jayapura, Abepura, Sentani, and Sarmi.

PT Telkom provides a back-up link capacity of 4.7 Gbps, supported by the utilization of 2,662 Mbps satellite links, 500 Mbps East Palapa Ring long houl radio, and 1,600 Mbps Sarmi-Biak long houl radio.
