PON XX Papua Guaranteed Safe from Separatist Groups, Covid-19 and Malaria

The implementation of PON XX 2021 is guaranteed to be safe. Apart from being safe from disturbances by the Papuan Separatist Group, the national level sporting event is also guaranteed to be safe from Covid-19, malaria and dengue fever.

The implementation of PON XX 2021 is less than 100 days away. All aspects are being prepared, including security issues. The public does not need to worry about security disturbances and the spread of Covid-19, as well as malaria and dengue. The local government in Papua confirmed that the XX National Sports Week (PON) would take place safely.

The people of Jayapura City and the three other clusters also seemed very enthusiastic about welcoming the contestants for the four-year event which will be held on October 2-15, 2021. “I have informed the governors, the 33 provincial KONIs throughout Indonesia, and the athletes that Papua is safe. , Papua is peaceful, and Papua is ready to carry out XX PON," said Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tomi Mano, during a discussion at the Merdeka Barat 9 Forum (FMB9) entitled "Peeking at the Readiness of PON XX Papua" on Thursday, June 24, 2021.

In the discussion held by the Ministry of Communication and Information online from Jakarta, two speakers were presented, namely the Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali and the Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Johnny G Plate. The discussion itself is an effort to welcome PON which has entered 100 days of implementation.

The statement from the Mayor of Jayapura also answered public concerns that doubted the continuity of the Papua PON because of security issues involving terrorist groups in Papua a few months ago. According to the Mayor of Benhur, the incident occurred far from the venue or the athlete's residence.

“Papua is safe, peaceful, and ready to carry out XX PON. So there's no need to be afraid. The shooting incident by an armed criminal group occurred far from the PON cluster, Jayapura, Merauke, Timika. So everything is safe," he said.

Not only security guarantees, Benhur also ensured that the Papua PON could run smoothly thanks to the implementation of the Covid-19 vaccination in the four PON clusters that were continuously encouraged. Through these efforts, he hopes, can prevent the risk of transmission during the event.

“People around the venue in four clusters, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Mimika, and Merauke are very enthusiastic. Evidently, many people come to the vaccine site from the Vaccine Festival that we do," said Benhur. He added that apart from holding a Vaccine Festival, his party also continued to spray mosquito larvae that cause malaria and dengue fever.

President Jokowi has instructed the acceleration of vaccination for athletes and the community around the venue. The Ministry of Health, through the Head of the Achievement Sports Health Section, the Directorate of Occupational Health and Sports Harry Papilaya, said that his party continued to prepare health needs during the PON. In June and July, they have conducted training for special health workers in charge of guarding PON.

Meanwhile, vaccination has been running according to standards, for athletes and the general public. For health protocols, they are currently still preparing the latest health protocols that adapt the health protocols for the Tokyo Olympics. Vaccination in Papua is running according to standards and has entered the fourth stage for the general public.

Preparations for the arena matches in the four PON clusters have been completed 100 percent and are ready to be used. “The venues in the four clusters are 100 percent ready. The most important thing is that communication, coordination, and openness must be done well. Because, this is the biggest sporting event (Indonesia). We are just waiting for the equipment for the test event in August," said Benhur.

In line with what was conveyed by the Mayor of Jayapura, Jayapura Regent Mathius Awoitauw in an interview with Indonesia.go.id, assured that athletes' families and officials from various regions did not need to worry about security issues. The location where gunfights often occur is far from the location of the match arena and the contingent's residence. "The community around the venue will participate in maintaining the security of the match. TNI and Polri have been prepared very professionally. So what's there to be afraid of? PON is safe," said Mathius.

He also emphasized that around the venue will also be sprayed with antimalarial and dengue fever. "Those who come healthy, go home must also be healthy," he said.

It should be noted that the Papuan Police Chief and the Cenderawasih Regional Military Command Commander in Papua dare to risk their positions for the security of the PON. The TNI and Polri will be on standby 24 hours to guard the arena and the contingent's residence.

The Commander of the Military Region (Pangdam) XVII/Cenderawasih Major General (Mayjen) Ignatius Yogo Triyono stated that all parties have now agreed to the success of the XX 2021 National Sports Week (PON). I make sure Indonesia (Polri) is safe. I risk my rank and position for the success of this PON,” said Yogo.

In line with Major General Ignatius, the Head of the Regional Police of the Republic of Indonesia (Kapolda) Papua Inspector General of Police (Irjen) Mathius D Fakhiri believes the security situation during the PON will be conducive. However, he reminded that security issues are not only the responsibility of the TNI-POLRI, but also the community.

“Now conditions can be safe, not only because we are TNI-Polri. But also thanks to the people who care about the security situation in their environment," said Fakhiri.
