PUPR Wants to Involve Papuan Youth in Managing PON Venue

Deputy Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) John Wempi Wetipo revealed that the four main venues for the XX PON have been handed over to the Papua Provincial Government (Pemprov). Wempi said that in the future, the management of the venue will be the responsibility of the Papua Provincial Government.

"The management of the venue is better if it involves Papuan youths who have high potential and capacity, because they are the generation that will inherit what has been built," Wempi said in a written statement, Thursday (17/6).

Wempi hopes that the Papua Provincial Government has prepared human resources to manage the four venues. In addition, he will also work harder for the next two to three months to prepare for the implementation of the Papua PON in October 2021.

In accordance with the mandate of Presidential Instruction No. 10 of 2017, the Ministry of PUPR through the Directorate General (Directorate General) of Cipta Karya built four sports venues to support the implementation of the XX Papua PON. The Aquatic Arena was built at a cost of Rp 401 billion by PT Waskita Karya (Persero) equipped with pool facilities according to Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) standards.

Furthermore, Istora Papua Bangkit was built at a cost of Rp 278.5 billion by PT PP (Persero) on an area of 33,016 cubic meters in the Kampung Harapan area. In the complex there is also the Lukas Enembe Main Stadium which is equipped with international standard facilities and other supporting facilities, such as a training or warm-up field and a parking area. The Istora Papua Bangkit building has won 3 awards from the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI).

The third and fourth venues are the cricket arena and hockey field (indoor and outdoor) which were built at a cost of Rp. 288.3 billion by PT Nindya Karya (Persero) on an area of 133,509 square meters. The Hockey Outdoor Venue has received certification from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) as an arena that is ready to be used for international matches.

"The Ministry of PUPR has provided SOPs on how to carry out maintenance, so that the buildings that we have built do not stall in a short period of time. Because this should be built in a sustainable manner so it needs maintenance from the local government," said Director General of Human Settlements at the PUPR Ministry Diana Kusumastuti.

Meanwhile, Member IV of BPK Isma Yatun revealed that his party had checked the accountability of the implementation of the construction of the XX Papua PON sports venue. According to Isma, the results of the development are in accordance with the recommendations given by the BPK RI.

"I am proud that Indonesia has a venue that uses advanced technology and is in Papua. I hope this venue can continue to be used after the PON is over," said Isma.

Presidential Special Staff Billy Mambrasar also supports optimal maintenance so that all infrastructure that has been built can be used by the Papuan people after the XX PON is completed. Billy said that after the PON is completed, the venue will be used by the general public, especially Papuan youths, to organize creative and innovative events.

In addition to the four main venues, the PUPR Ministry is also building three additional venues, namely rowing, archery, and rollerblading which are targeted to be completed in July 2021. In addition, it is also building accommodation flats for PON XX Papua and structuring the Kampung Harapan area.
