Regional Heads throughout the Saireri Region Propose the Establishment of a DOB

The Regional Heads Forum throughout the Saireri region in Papua proposed the formation of a new autonomous region (DOB) called the Saireri Province as an effort to accelerate the development and welfare of the people in the region.

"We, the Saireri people, traditional leaders, and youths convey aspirations regarding the formation of the Saireri DOB to Commission II of the DPR to immediately form a province," said Chairman of the Forum for Regional Heads throughout the Saireri region, Herry Ario Naap, in the Commission II DPR General Hearing Meeting, at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Monday.

He said that during the discussion on the revision of Law No. 21/2001 on Papua's Special Autonomy, there was a polemic in all customary areas in Papua.

However, according to him, the Saireri customary territory was the first to express an opinion in favor of Otsus Papua Volume Two through the revision of the Special Autonomy Law.

“When other customary areas refused (the revision of the Special Autonomy Law), we agreed and submitted the material to the DPR and the government. After the issuance of Law No. 2/2021 on Otsus Papua, traditional leaders, women, the community asked us to convey their aspirations for the establishment of the Saireri Province," he said.

He said the Saireri region has abundant natural resource potential, especially from the marine side, for example Biak Regency with fisheries potential of 1,000,000 tons per year will generate foreign exchange of around Rp. 17 trillion per year.

Because of that, the Biak Numfor Regent assessed that the Saireri area was worthy of being a province that could improve development and people's welfare and provide foreign exchange for the country.

"Because "We are in the territorial waters and in cooperation with four districts on August 28, 2021, we will carry out the first fishery export, namely yellowfin tuna. The potential in Biak Regency is grouper, in Yapen Archipelago with baramundi fish cultivation, Waropen Regency with crab and shrimp, "he said.

Naap said they had formed a team to prepare all technical equipment for the proposed formation of new autonomous regions and academic studies were in the process of preparation and were consulted at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The RDPU was led by the Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR, Junimart Girsang, and was attended by members of Commission II of the DPR physically and online.

The event was also attended by, among others, the Secretary of the Chairperson of the Regional Heads' Forum throughout the Saireri region as well as the Regent of the Yapen Islands, Tonny Tesar, the Chairman of the Biak Regency DPRD, Milka Rumaropen.
