Tito Karnavian: The Goal of the Expansion of Papua to Accelerate Development

The purpose of regional expansion in Papua is to accelerate development.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta.

"Accelerate development," said Tito, when asked about the government's considerations for regional expansion in Papua.
 
Tito said that development in Papua was delayed compared to other regions, although he acknowledged that many areas outside Papua were still having difficulties.
 
However, Papua received special attention because the region was only integrated into Indonesia in 1969.

The man who once served as the Papuan Regional Police Chief also assessed that there was inequality in Papua, especially in mountainous areas.
 
"Please come there in the mountains, yes, there is an imbalance because they were late, only joining Indonesia in 1969, the other (provinces) in 1945. Therefore, it is necessary to accelerate development," said Tito.

Tito also believes that regional expansion can be the answer because according to him, the province of West Papua, which is a division of the province of Papua, has succeeded in accelerating development there.
 
"Once West Papua was divided, there was an extraordinary acceleration. Sorong, Manokwari, which was once a sub-district, has developed. Tambrauw was closed before, Maybrat was isolated, now it is open."
 
"Well, we take that model, we want to accelerate the development of Papua," said Tito.

As is known, the DPR has set three draft laws (RUU) related to the division of territory in Papua as a DPR initiative bill.

The three bills are the Bill on the Establishment of the South Papua Province, the Bill on the Establishment of the Central Papua Province, and the Bill on the Establishment of the Central Highlands Papua Province.
 
After being agreed to become a DPR initiative bill, the three bills will enter the discussion process between the DPR and the government.
