The handling of serious human rights cases in Papua by the Jokowi government is appreciated by the United Nations
Allegations of gross human rights violations in Paniai, Papua, were finally resolved by the government. In fact, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, appreciated the performance of the Attorney General's Office (AGO) in handling it.
This was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD in a virtual press conference on the YouTube channel of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs RI.
“When I met directly with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, who is the former President of Chile, she expressed her appreciation to the Indonesian Attorney General's Office. He explicitly said that the AGO was more serious in processing the handling of gross human rights violations by processing the case in Paniai, Papua, in court," said Mahfud MD.
Meanwhile, in a press statement on his visit to the UN Human Rights Council and the UN High Commission for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, Mahfud said that the handling of the Paniai human rights violation case by the AGO is a manifestation of the Indonesian government's commitment to resolving cases of gross human rights violations in the country.
Mahfud said that the Paniai case was the only case of serious human rights violations that occurred in the era of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and was recommended by the National Human Rights Commission to be resolved by the government.
“This is the only case of gross human rights violations that occurred during the Jokowi era. The other twelve, happened in the past and were difficult to resolve. This one, we will immediately finish," he explained.
In addition, Mahfud also said that the issue of the UN Human Rights Council regarding the issue of human rights violations in Papua was not true.
“We were actually provoked by unclear social media. If you look at the website of the UN Human Rights Council, the UN High Commission for Human Rights, the speech yesterday was not available. Indonesia is clean from the Papua problem," said Mahfud.
In fact, in the opening speech of the 50th session of the Human Rights Council Session by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mahfud continued, Indonesia is not included in the list of 21 countries whose human rights developments are being referred to by the United Nations.
"The High Commissioner for Human Rights mentions that the 21 countries whose human rights developments are referred to, Indonesia is not included in it," he added.
